What Does Herr Klaus Do in the Summer?

Life in Thuringia Between Christmases

When most people think of Herr Klaus, they imagine a snowy winter evening.

They picture lantern light glowing against fresh-fallen snow, reindeer standing beneath starlit skies, and preparations for Christmas well underway. In their minds, Herr Klaus belongs to winter.

Yet if you were to visit the forests of Thuringia in the warmth of summer, you would discover a surprising truth.

Herr Klaus is just as busy in June as he is in December.

In fact, some would argue he is even busier.

For while Christmas may arrive upon a single night, the work that makes it possible is carried out throughout the entire year.

As I write this letter, the snow has long since vanished from the mountain slopes. Wildflowers sway in the meadows, birds fill the forests with song, and the warm summer sun shines upon the Great Stone Hall.

Yet even now, preparations for Christmas are quietly underway.

What Herr Klaus does in the Summer
The Summertime Klaus

Listening to the Ravens

Among Herr Klaus's oldest companions are the ravens Hugin and Munin.

Each morning, they depart upon the wind.

Over mountains they fly.

Across rivers and forests they travel.

They visit villages, farms, towns, and distant kingdoms, observing the affairs of men.

When evening comes, they return to Thuringia.

Perched upon pine branches or the roof of the Great Stone Hall, they deliver their reports to Herr Klaus.

Some of the stories they bring are joyful.

Acts of kindness.

Unexpected generosity.

Neighbors helping neighbors.

Children showing courage when courage was required.

Other stories are sadder.

Loneliness.

Hardship.

Loss.

Yet Herr Klaus listens to them all.

For Christmas has never been merely about gifts.

It is about people.

And to care for people, one must first understand them.

The ravens help Herr Klaus remember that every family has a story and every heart carries its own burdens.

Consulting the PúttØrevolk

Beyond the forests and mountains, hidden from the eyes of ordinary men, lie the realms of the PúttØrevolk.

Few among the peoples of the North have ever seen these ancient folk, and fewer still have been welcomed into their halls.

The PúttØrevolk are guardians of old wisdom.

They remember songs first sung when the world was young. They preserve histories forgotten by kingdoms. They study the movements of stars, the turning of seasons, and the deeper mysteries woven throughout creation.

Several times each summer, Herr Klaus journeys to their hidden realm.

There he seeks counsel regarding matters that cannot be answered by tools or craftsmanship alone.

The elves watch over ancient pathways between worlds. They guard sacred groves untouched by time. They observe signs and patterns that others overlook.

It is often the PúttØrevolk who first perceive when a great change is approaching.

A darkness stirring beyond the mountains.

A season unlike those that came before.

Or a child destined for a purpose greater than anyone yet understands.

Their wisdom has guided Herr Klaus for many years.

Though the elves seldom speak quickly, and often answer one question with another, Herr Klaus has learned that patience is usually rewarded.

For among the PúttØrevolk, wisdom is not measured by how much one knows, but by how deeply one understands.

Walking Among the Reindeer

Summer is a glorious season for the reindeer herds.

The meadows are rich with grass and wildflowers. Streams run cold and clear from the mountains. Young fawns race across the hillsides beneath endless blue skies.

Donner and Blitzen spend much of their summer wandering these meadows.

Though they are already known for their speed and spirit, Herr Klaus often joins them in the fields.

There he observes the herds.

Not every reindeer is suited for the work of Christmas.

Some are swift but reckless.

Some are strong but stubborn.

Others possess patience, loyalty, and courage beyond measure.

These qualities cannot always be seen during winter.

They reveal themselves slowly throughout the year.

A reindeer that helps another across a stream.

One that remains calm during a storm.

One that returns to a frightened companion instead of running ahead.

These are the things Herr Klaus notices.

For character matters more than strength.

And the greatest journeys are undertaken by those who travel not only with speed, but with heart.

Keeping the Gnomes Busy

The Gnomes are small hardworking folk.

At least, they are when Herr Klaus is watching.

Throughout the summer months they maintain hidden pathways through the forest. They tend herb gardens, gather berries, preserve ancient records, and care for creatures injured in the wild.

Yet no matter how diligent they may be, Herr Klaus always seems to find another task for them.

A bridge requiring repair.

A trail needing clearing.

A storehouse requiring organization.

An ancient map in need of updating.

The gnomes occasionally complain about these assignments.

Quite loudly, in fact.

Nevertheless, the work always gets done.

And though they may never admit it openly, the gnomes take great pride in helping prepare the North for the seasons ahead.

The Search for the Perfect Yule Log

Many imagine that the Yule Log is gathered only days before Christmas.

The gnomes know better.

Across the forests of Thuringia, the Thurinickel clans keep watch throughout the year.

Whenever they travel through the woods, they keep their eyes open for possibilities.

A perfectly shaped fallen pine.

A great cedar struck by lightning but preserved by time.

A tree whose wood burns long and bright.

Finding the perfect Yule Log is no simple task.

It requires patience.

The right tree.

The right season.

The right story.

For every Yule Log carries with it a tale.

Some commemorate a great kindness.

Others mark a year of perseverance.

Still others honor friendships that have endured through hardship.

By summer's end, several promising candidates have usually been identified.

Then comes the debate.

And few creatures in all the North enjoy debating more than gnomes.

Seeking Wisdom from the Dwarves

Deep beneath the mountains dwell the dwarves.

Masters of stone.

Masters of metal.

Masters of craft.

Whenever Herr Klaus faces a particularly difficult problem, he often seeks their counsel.

A new lantern design.

A stronger sleigh runner.

A finer carving knife.

A more efficient workshop tool.

The dwarves delight in such challenges.

Entire evenings may pass as they gather around glowing forges discussing improvements and possibilities.

Herr Klaus values these meetings greatly.

For wisdom is often found among those who dedicate themselves to mastering a single craft.

And few in the North possess greater mastery than the dwarves.

Watching Over Ulvie

Of all his responsibilities, this may be the most important.

Children grow quickly.

One summer they are chasing butterflies through a meadow.

The next they are asking questions about the wider world.

Herr Klaus sees this happening in Ulvie.

The boy's adventures continue to grow larger.

His curiosity grows deeper.

His understanding grows stronger.

Sometimes Herr Klaus teaches through stories.

Sometimes through work.

Sometimes through quiet conversations beside a campfire.

And sometimes he teaches by saying nothing at all, allowing the boy to discover a lesson for himself.

For there are truths that cannot be handed to another.

They must be learned through experience.

Christmas Begins Long Before December

The truth is that Christmas is not built in December.

It is built throughout the year.

Every toy carved by the patient hands of the PúttØrevolk.

Every tool forged by the dwarves.

Every trail maintained by the gnomes.

Every report delivered by the ravens.

Every lesson learned.

Every friendship strengthened.

Every act of kindness remembered.

These become the foundation upon which Christmas stands.

By the time the first snow falls, much of the work has already been done.

And so, while the forests of Thuringia bloom beneath the summer sun, Herr Klaus continues his labor.

Quietly.

Faithfully.

Patiently.

For he understands something many have forgotten.

The most wonderful seasons of life are prepared long before they arrive.

And perhaps that is true not only of Christmas, but of life itself.

Until next time, my friend, may your summer days be filled with wonder, and may you never lose sight of the quiet preparations that make life's greatest blessings possible.
